My fitness journey: Update #1

So this is a different health journey update than I was expecting to post. As stated in My Health Journey I’ve been trudging down the road of diets, exercise and the chase of overall fitness for some time. To be honest I suck at it. I have an overall awkward feeling no matter what I do. Meaning I feel awkward when I do things that are deemed unhealthy and I feel awkward when I do things that are healthy.

How I’m feeling

Last night I came to the realization that I hate my body. Like not that I’m just displeased with it but that I really hate it. And you can’t lose weight from a place of hatred. If your mind isn’t healthy then your body can’t be healthy either. In fact feeling like this is usually the precursor to an eating disorder.

I was distraught. I literally cried during my workout. Not because it was hard. Not even because it hurt or because I was tired. I was just frustrated. I went to the park today to walk my mile. Again, I cried the whole way through. If I’m honest I’m crying while I write this.

I miss my body before it became what it is now. It wasn’t ever perfect but I was fine with where everything was despite the relentless teasing I received from my peers. I look back at pictures of myself from high school and wonder how the fuck I let my family and my bullies make me feel bad about what I consider a banging body.

People are literally spending thousands of dollars to attain a shape I already had. I loved my body. I appreciated the curves. I loved my perky DDs and my voluptuous ass. My arms weren’t perfectly toned and my stomach wasn’t perfectly flat but I was fine as hell and received plenty of compliments for women and men alike.

The actual update

Now, well now I tend not to look at myself. I resent my body now. I’m enraged at not truly loving the body I had back then. Honestly I’m just frustrated, which doesn’t create a positive environment for change.

Since I wrote last I have lost 7 pounds so there is a positive note to this update. Unfortunately, there feels like there are a million more to lose. I know that there are all the clichés about how “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and how it “ took time to gain it so it will take time to lose it” but some days you just feel defeated.

If at first you don’t succeed…

I’ll hop back on the horse though. I’ll work on my abs and arms tonight. In the morning I’ll be back on the trail to walk my mile. I’m considering doing a 10 day smoothie cleanse to clear my body up a bit. Hopefully my next update will be much more cheerful, but I’m comfortable talking about my struggles. So I hope you’re comfortable with reading them.

Until next time,

Dominique Nicole

Product Critique #2: Molr Carbon + Coconut Teeth Whitening Powder

Sparkling smiles are all the rage. At present we are in the thick of the holiday season (and there is nothing worse than seeing folks you haven’t seem I’m a while with a dingy smile) but sparkling teeth are in any time of year. I recently came into the knowledge of Molr Dental Club Carbon and Coconut Teeth Whitening Powder and Toothbrush and my smile is much better for it!

About the product.

The Carbon and Coconut Teeth Whitening Powder is made from a brand specific blend of organic coconut shell activated charcoal. The powder is 100% natural, medical grade activated charcoal which can be useful in whitening your smile and detoxing your mouth and gums.

How it works?

According to the the site “Activated charcoal from coconut shells is ground into a fine powder. When you brush with this powder it acts like tiny little sponges to absorb and attract stain off of your teeth through a process called adsorption (it’s Science).”

How to use?

According to the site you should wet your toothbrush and then dip the brush into the powder. Brush your teeth for 1-2 minutes as normal and go on about your life.

I personally will not ever stick my toothbrush into a jar of anything, I do not care that I’m the only one using it…. that’s a no.

How I use the product: brush my teeth with my preferred toothpaste of the day, use a spoon to sprinkle powder in the included toothbrush, brush my teeth as normal and get a dazzling smile.

My thoughts on the product

Pros :

The product does indeed make your teeth sparkle! I feel like my smile has become even more dazzling since I incorporated this product into my regimen. I use the powder about 3 times a week.

It is a natural product. With all the junk and chemicals that they pump into our beauty products and food it’s nice to have a natural teeth whitening product that really works. It doesn’t make your teeth sensitive after use like bleaching gels and such have the tendency to do.

Leaves a little bit of an aftertaste. Once I rinse the charcoal out of my mouth I always go back in with my regular toothbrush to add the minty feel back into my mouth. This is a must for me, other wise my mouth doesn’t feel as clean as it looks.

It’s a little messy. Getting it on the brush can be a tedious task. As stated earlier, it is recommended that you dip the toothbrush into the powder but I find that to just be disgusting. I use a silver teaspoon to sprinkle the powder onto the brush. It will also get all over your sink and whenever you use it you will need to completely wipe your sink down.

I recommend the Molr Dental Club Carbon and Coconut Teeth Whitening Powder and Toothbrush set. It has quickly become one of my favorite products that I’ve received in my FabFitFun subscription box (to read more about my favorite things click here.) The clean up is a bit annoying but the payoff of the dazzling smile is worth it. You can purchase the product here. It comes with a two month supply of powder and a toothbrush for $43.95. Are you ready for a sparkling smile?

Four reasons to “let your booty do that yoga”!

Being healthy is great for your physical, spiritual and mental well being. With that being said, I am not advocating going on a crash diet to obtain industry standards of perfection, I’m just advocating taking care of self. One of my favorite ways to practice my love of self is through yoga. Yoga is in fact amazballs! I leave yoga and feel like a million bucks. So here are a few reasons why you should turn on Janelle Monae and “let your booty do that yoga”.

Low Impact

When I’m in a good mood and my joints don’t hurt I am ALL about a good jog or a kickboxing class. Unfortunately I rock ballet flats at work all week and treed back on forth on concrete floors all day. This is killer on my joints (especially considering the weight gain that my body is adjusting to). Yoga allows me to get the exercise I need while being gentle on my knees and decreasing the pain in my joints #winning.

Yoga increases your flexibility and range of motion exponentially. This is advantageous for many reasons. One being it keeps you lean and loose. Tight muscles can lead to strains when doing more strenuous workouts. Tight muscles can also lead to discomfort during the work day, especially if sitting for long periods of time and lead to tension. The next benefit is for those of us who like to dance. Have you ever noticed when you go out and you feel like you’re about to work it out but minutes into getting your flex on you feel tired and tight? Yea, that my friend are your kinked up muscles begging to be stretched. Getting in a nice yoga class the morning before will keep your moves on point the whole night through.

Mental Ease

The one thing I love most about yoga is that it is quiet. I mean, there is music playing in the background but it is light. In class you can focus on your breathing, quiet your mind and let all your mental worries float away. Mental health is so vitally important and we should all take more time to focus on it. *Tip: Just 5 – 10 mins of yoga and meditation first thing in the morning will lift your spirits, elevate your energy (spiritual and metabolic), increase your blood flow and provide a levelness in consciousness that will help you master the day.

Last, but certainly not least… Yoga Pants

I personally am an advocate of wearing normal clothes on a regular basis and to me yoga pants do not count. However, showing off the booty in yoga pants is something one simply can’t help sometimes. If I’m truly honest, sometimes I go to yoga class just to justify being in yoga pants most of the day. Hey! Don’t judge my life. I like showing off my peach and at least I got a good workout out the deal.
So ladies, I know there are a good portion of us out there who have yoga pants that have never seen a yoga class. Go ahead and pull them out the closet (or just roll on out the bed) and let your booty do that yoga. FLEX IT!
